January 2010 - Goal

Romans 12:2 - Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

A girlfriend occasionally forwards me daily scripture from Joel & Victoria Osteen: the above scripture was explained like this:

Many people today don't realize that the reason they're not happy, the reason they're not enjoying life is simply because they've trained their minds in the wrong direction. They've trained their mind to worry. They've trained their mind to complain. They've trained their mind to see the negative. But just as we can form these negative mindsets, we can retrain our minds and form positive mindsets.

One of the main keys to developing a positive attitude is to learn how to stay grateful. When you stay grateful, you are focusing on what's right rather than what's wrong. This doesn't happen automatically, you have to discipline yourself to focus on the positive. You have to make a conscious effort every single day until a good habit is formed.

Remember, when you live with an attitude of praise and thanksgiving, you are shielding yourself from the attacks of the enemy. The seeds of discouragement cannot take root in a grateful heart. Neither can bitterness, envy or strife. When you have a grateful heart, you are strong. You are empowered, and you can confidently enjoy the good life He has prearranged for you!

This among other things I will work on in January. In the meantime, I'm enjoying listening to the boys build cars and helicopters and such with their new erector set. They spend 30+ minutes building something, 1 minute playing with it, and 2 minutes taking it apart to build something else.

M & M

This is a cat tent with three holes on the sides you can't see. Rylan comes in the house with it on and says, "look mama! I'm an m&m."

Swimming Lessons

Katrina Justice. She has a pool in her back yard and she is a no-nonsense, let's get it done swim instructor. In 45-minutes, L went from swimming underwater and not using his arms, to swimming across the width of the pool, using his arms and practicing proper breathing technique. R went from just jumping in the pool and barely putting his face in the water, to diving for balls and swimming using his arms and legs and practicing proper breathing technique. Katrina has the boys take turns, and works fast, but has lots of fun. I was so durn proud of my boys and what they accomplished today. Four more days should have them ready to go for the rest of the summer. I will use Katrina again next summer.

Pumpkins

It take about 6 months for a pumpkin to reach maturity from a seed. And what do we do with them? Carve them up and throw them away. What a waste. I'm on the search for how to eat our pumpkins when we harvest them. God gave us food to eat, not carve up and throw away.

Stepping off my soap box now.

Accountability Part 3

It continues to happen...I'm looking at 206 today. A loss of 3 pounds since the last time, and a total loss of 16! I'm finding that I'm simply not hungry after working out; all I crave is water. And the amount of food that my stomach can hold at one sitting is greatly reduced. Those late evening cravings are the hardest obstacles right now. Not sure if I really want that date night with the hubby when I get these 6 pounds off. Seems that eating at a restaurant can be a defeative reward. Wonder if I can talk him into a couples pedicure instead, or maybe get a sitter for a Saturday afternoon and go for a bike ride through Oak Mountain. That would be almost free.

I'm running now and it feels so good; only a 1/2 mile at the moment, but everything good is worth working toward and waiting for. My DH and I have a bet right now - it's really more of a fitness challenge for each of us to increase our own fitness levels so we can get certified in the next LM class. I'm out to prove to myself that I can get through the Step class without falling over after track 6. There are 11 or 12 tracks in the class.

So how are the clothes fittting - that's supposedly the most important part, right? I have pair of capri's that hang off of me. I'll be quite sad to let them go b/c they are soooooo comfortable. But on the flip side, my mother gave me a pair of WHITE capri's that, I have to admit, look quite good on me, and are a size smaller than what I've been wearing. Hooray!!!

Accountability part 2

No pictures for you. You'll just have to believe it when you see me. This morning I'm carrying around 209 pounds. I believe that's down a bit.

I had a HUGE wake up call last Friday for L's graduation. We were all getting "fansy" for the event, and when I looked in my closet for something fansy to wear, I realized, I don't have anything in my current size. I haven't gotten fansy in about 3 years! I did find one skirt that I was able to get zipped up and I was completely uncomfortable the whole evening. But thank goodness for spandex woven into clothes. The shirt I wore kind of matched my skirt and the shoes - do light beigey shoes go with anything? I sure hope so, b/c that's what I had on. Yuck. At this same time on Friday, it occurred to me that I will need to "get fansy" again at the end of the month for my parents 50th anniversary party. So I'm in the push to drop 9 pounds in 14 days. My knee better hold up b/c I have to start running.

I'm always telling people that it doesn't matter how much you exercise if you don't change the way you eat. Time for me to practice what I preach.

It's almost over

School, that is. I'm excited about not having to write checks for tuition each month. I'm excited about not having to pack lunches twice a week. I'm excited about the option of staying home in our jammies all day. I'm anxious about keeping the boys busy every day and not losing my mind while Daddy is out of town. At least for this week, I will get one break - Tuesday. L has a field trip on Thursday - my other free morning, so it's not a free morning this week. I will relish in my last free Tuesday until September. :)

And a busy week it turns out to be:
Monday:
Visit to Gold's gym Colonnade at 1:00 for an NBC group X taping. Little bit of Vive, Pump and Crunk. I've never done crunk dancing. I really can't do much more than step side to side, but then we only live once! Soccer practice at 5.
Tuesday:
Free morning - doctor visit in the afternoon. This should be interesting with both kids present.
Wednesday:
teaching at 9:30, home for a shower, pick up L from school, then off to the scholastic book fair.
Thursday:
R's last day of school. Water fun day, pizza party. I need to remember to get that fruit tray. L's big end of the year field trip to the Heart of Dixie RR. Shhhh...we can't tell R! Soccer practice at 5.
Friday:
teaching at Noon. L's last day of school. His teacher has told me it's just a fun day. They will practice for graduation in the morning and then just play the rest of the day. I'll pick him up early and take him to the "big red slide gym" with me. Graduation at 7.
Saturday:
Soccer game in the morning - the last one of the season. Awards handed out at DQ. Birthday party in the afternoon. Helena Farmer's Market at Buck Creek is supposed to open!!! No idea when I'll have time to visit that unless it's at 7:00 am.
Sunday:
a pure day of rest!

The week of the 18th - teach twice and an allergy appt. That's it. Amazing how life can go from warp speed to standing still in the blink of an eye.

So what does the summer hold: a quick trip to Kansas, riding bikes at the park, swimming (the boys have swim lessons in June), hopefully a camping trip and a visit to either Chattanooga or Baton Rouge, a few visits to the zoo, maybe even a trip to Alabama Adventures, summer "school" - I purchased some workbooks to do with the boys every day - gotta keep the learning up to speed...oh yeah, and then there is the summer reading program at the library. That was so much fun last year. Hot, hot, hot, but fun. Whew!

Bicylces

R has been outgrowing his trike, and he's been wanting to ride big brothers bicycle. So, Sunday dad takes the boys to Toys R Us. There on the floor is a green bicycle that R hops on and will not get off. He rides it to the register and the bike is purchased. What else are you going to do? It's the bike he wants, and dad tells me he will not get off of it. Oh, and it's not just any bike. It's a Tony Hawk bike complete with trick foot rests on the front wheel. Like a 3 year old will be doing tricks. Maybe Tony Hawk's three year old. So, Dad takes the boys out to Veteran's park so they can ride their bikes. And having so much fun (I'll have to the pix off my phone and then post them).

Later Sunday evening, as we are grilling hamburgers, L asks Dad if we can take off the training wheels. So Dad removes the training wheels as well as the pedals. We've seen bikes in Bicycling magazine without pedals. This allows the kids to practice balancing without something getting in the way. Dad and Greg practice the balancing act while riding the bike down the hill in our backyard. Not the big hill from the door to the trampoline, but the slight in the back from the swing set to the trampoline. L picks it up rather quick and the pedals go back on. We go out to the front yard after eating dinner and L starts riding in the street - WITHOUT TRAINING WHEELS!!!

Meanwhile - R is just happily pedaling along at his own slow-ish pace and having a blast. So look for us this summer at J.T. park riding around on the parking lot in the back. Our list of summer acitivities has grown to two: swimming and riding bikes.

Accountability

I've had this thought in my mind for three months. I need accountability in my life in order for me to get anything done. If it was only me in my world, well, I'm very lazy and would rather someone else do everything for me. Perhaps I should have been born into royalty. But whatever. So, I'm having a tough time losing this bulge around my middle...really all the excess weight from head to toe - it's sliding off at a snails pace.

I'm told that since I'm a group fitness instructor that I am considered an athlete now. Wow...really? Athletes treat their bodies as temples and take care of them. This athlete doesn't do that. I have participates in my classes that are losing more weight at a faster pace than I am, and we celebrate those accomplishments. I am so happy for them. And after all, as instructors, we are always told to have the mindset that our classes are for the participants, not for us. But at the same time, we are to be role models for our participants. The only thing I'm role modeling is the amount of weight I can lift and push.

So starting today, I will make this weight loss journey a public one, so that I can have some sense of accountability to someone.

November 2007, Gold's Gym of Pelham opened and I weighed 222.
January 2008, I had a light bulb moment that I can teach BodyPump. It will be my thing.
May 2008, went to a three day BodyPump training.
August 2008, received my first class: Wednesday 9:30 am.
October 2008, was asked to fill in the Friday 5:15 abs class and 5:30 BodyPump class for an instructor going out on medical leave. We now team teach that class, and she is a HUGE inspiration to me.
April 2009, have slowly lost weight over the course of the above events and as of today weigh 210. I've been stuck at this weight for three weeks.

That is what is happening to me. I will drop 2-3 pounds and just sit at that same weight for weeks and weeks. I have terrible eating habits, and it's sad to admit that my eating habits are worse when my husband is around. When he is out of town, I don't eat that much. Oh, and then there is the week before the monthly thing - food choices are thrown out the window - just give me chocolate. Better yet - ship me to Hershey, PA for the week.

So, here are the goals I had set for myself about 6-9 months ago.
1. get to the 200 pound mark and have dinner at OutBack Steakhouse. We went there for new year's and it was awful...very busy and I didn't get what I thought I had ordered. We went back again a few weeks later, and it was better, but it was not a celebratory event. I think I'll change this to the cheesecake factory. G and I had the best date night there one time...we sat at the bar area and ordered appetizers and wine and cheesecake. I want to relive that again. So new goal - reach One-derland, and celebrate with a trip to C.F.
2. Reach goal weight of 170 (yeah, I'll be in about a size 8-10 and look nearly anorexic), and get a new digital SLR camera. Seems this would be a huge motivator b/c I really do not like my little Sony. It's slow and by the time it's ready to take a picture, the moment is over.

I'll get the man to take a photo of me and we'll consider that my before photo. I'm going to do this with diet modifications and ramp up my exercise routine. This will work this time. If I can lose 10 pounds by the end of May, then I will know I'm on the right track.

Saturday...

It was hot at soccer this morning. Three more weeks of soccer and three more weeks of school. Should probably start planning the summer now and get organized so when that day comes, we aren't sitting around yelling at each other for lack of boredom.

The yard was mowed today, the boys found a frog and just about man-handled it to death. It was a fairly large frog, so it had a good life - until the boys got a hold of it. Dad said that the frog was really enjoying being toted around in a pitcher of water with a rock to perch on. I offered to take the frog to a new home, but it is currently hanging onto life in the front yard - after being thrown over the fence. Wonder why we don't have pets????

Sent Dad to Wal-Mart for a $10 plastic swimming pool - just something for brief entertainment until the pool opens next month. He comes home with one of those $15 pools with "reinforced" yet easily collapsable sides. And then he says he couldn't find the hard shell plastic swimming pools - they were sitting outside the building. I know, I know...that's a really dumb place to put a selection of swimming pools - they should really be stacked in the back of the store with the other boxed swimming pool items, so that you have to get a large flat bed cart and wheel the hard plastic pool through the store and out the front to your car. Whatever. The boys spent two and half hours in that little pool and simply had a blast. Our neighbor wheeled over in her scooter and we all had ice cream pops, chatted and watched the boys play in water. Everyone was happy.

This is not a typical Saturday for us, so it was fun to just exist as a family and forget about adult responsibilities.

Not quite summer, but...

Mama was really wanting to watch the boys play on a slip n slide and I've been talking about it for weeks. It finally warmed up just enough to make it worth it. But really, the boys don't care what temperature it is, as long as they can play in water.

Hey look! A new Post!

I know you all have given up on me. I have too in some sense, but now that my plans have changed for this weekend, and I'm free, perhaps this blog will find life once again...stayed tuned...

100 Days of School

Wish I had taken a picture, but we was in a hurray!

So about a week after the book parade is the 100th day of school. I'm so, so glad that schools make this big deal over 100 days. And perhaps they should b/c that means there are less than 100 days left until summer break. Great for the teachers, sometimes not so great for the parents. Anyway...a note was sent home not once, but twice about gathering 100 items to glue to a poster and bring to school. In the back of my mind, I knew that L had a project to take to school sometime this week and it was even written in my calendar. I remembered the morning of. So, I'm sitting at my computer thinking of at least 10 items that I can print out 10 times, cut out and clue to some construction paper in an hour.

Then I had to go to the bathroom. I'm not real sure why the bathroom helps me clear my mind, but seriously, my best ideas come from time spent in the bathroom, taking a shower, straightening my hair, whatever. It's my think tank.

We have Legos. Lots of Legos. So I grabbed some construction paper, the box of Legos and start ed counting. I asked L to help me count, but he suddenly could only count to 12. I spelled out L's name and made a frame around it, used lots of glue and wah-lah! Project done with time to spare.

Thank goodness the next project is not due until the end of March. I can't do that one at the last minute b/c we'll be in Atlanta the weekend before it's due. But I'll probably still forget and will scramble the day of. Procrastination must be my thing. That and some precious thinking time in the bathroom.

The Book Parade

At L's school they read lots of books and this month the 5K classes presented a parade of books for the rest of the school. The students had to pick their favorite book and create a float of their favorite character in the book or dress up as that character. Of course, L picked Thomas, and then Mom's imagination went a bit crazy.

Happy New Year

Seriously? It's been more than a month since I added anything? I just opened the curtains in the green room and it's a beautiful day outside; and cold (32 degrees). And then I knocked over the bucket of Legos. Guess what I get to do.

So let's get this thing updated.
G: got a promotion and he's now the Corporate Quality Assurance Manager for three production plants and 17 distribution centers (I think that's right). So he travels. I resent that he travels, but it's what he does, so I have to find my happy place about him being gone, and learn to spend quality time with the boys. Not to mention, quality time with myself, so I'll probably need to get off the computer once in a while. Oh back to G: he's also doing so great on his weight loss journey. He's so lucky to get to go shopping in his closet! He's even luckier to be going shopping for smaller clothes! I know that he is overloaded at work, but he always manages to keep his composure about everything and just goes along with whatever it takes.

L: He and I will butt heads as long as we are alive. He is doing fantastic in school, but sometimes doesn't want to go. Who does, really? He's up to 50+ pounds and at 5 years old, is wearing a size 6-7. He still loves trains, jumping on the trampoline, running, wearing jammies, cooking, and is now into playing catch and soccer. We have enrolled him in a spring soccer league. I love the fact that he still laughs at Little Bear , Maggie and the Ferocious Beast and other toddler shows on Noggin, even though he's seen the same shows hundred of times. Everywhere he goes, he ends up with a girlfriend; he always has one girl in school that latches onto him, and he'll pick up a few chicks on the playground or the playplace at Chick-fil-A. Ah, the short-lived romance.

R: Is there such a thing as too much affection? This child loves to hug, snuggle and be held. He likes to rub his face on yours and press his cheeks into yours. He also likes to climb, hop, bounce, be held upside down and throw random punches for no reason at his brother...then come crying when brother hits him back. He also loves trains, trucks, jumping on the trampoline, helping me cook, snuggling, sugar, hugging and more sugar. Put this child in a candy factory and he'll be in pure bliss.

My boys are brothers through and through. Two peas in a pod, but those peas better not touch, and the pod will never be big enough. They put their whole body into it when they laugh and when they cry, and they are fiercly competitive with each other. Thank goodness L is learning the art of compromise and negotiation (only in his favor for now). Their favorite meal is chicken and fries but they also love comfort food like grilled cheese and tomato soup. And they always come and snuggle in bed with us in the morning before we start our day. They are my complete pain and all encompassing joy.

Me: I have a lot of "issues" to work through esp that of finding the lemonade or silver lining or whatever when things don't quite work out. I have lofty goals for this year, but the year hasn't started out the way I had planned. I got sick and then ended up with a burst eardrum. That has set me back two weeks on my fitness goals. I have lost about 6 pounds b/c I've been too dizzy and sick to my stomach, and my jeans are hanging off of me, but the next smaller size is just a tad too tight. I've never been the best homemaker since having R, but I'm finding that it's a full time job to keep the house organized and at least picked up and a little less cluttered. I'll never like cleaning toilets. And it's even more of a pain because little boys pee everywhere, so I get to remove the lid to get the smell completely gone. ugh!

I'm still teaching BodyPump and will strive to kick up the cardio by spinning and maybe some other classes. It's a lot of work to keep my class fresh and mix up songs and routines week to week, but the adrenaline rush is amazing. And people are noticing the change in my legs. Look out shorts! I plan to scrapbook more this year, and tap into my creative side. And then there are two trips home, a trip to the beach or we may take the kids to Chicago, a camping trip, a quick weekend in Atlanta and that may just break the bank. Oh, speaking of banks...this is supposed to be the year that we seriously dig ourselves out of debt. Mama needs a new car, our house needs painted, etc.

So there's were we've been and a little of where we are going.
